How to Store Sicilian Bread
This yeast-based Sicilian bread is often served with a glass of milk. You should keep it in a refrigerator at room temperature to ensure it stays fresh. If you do not eat it immediately, it will go bad very fast. This recipe is best served with warm milk, which should be at a temperature of around 104 degrees Fahrenheit or more. However, if you are unable to find fresh milk in your area, you can purchase it at a store that carries it.
To make Sicilian bread, you must make the dough a day before. You can either use store bought or homemade dough. Simply add water and olive oil to a large bowl. Mix until the dough forms a ball and is moist. If you have leftover dough, cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 12 hours. If you have extra dough, you can also prepare the sauce and breadcrumbs ahead of time.
The first rise will take about an hour, and the second will take a couple of hours. You can also freeze the dough to store it for up to two months. To make the dough, combine half a cup of water with a pinch of sugar. Stir the mixture for about three to four minutes, and if the yeast is active, it will dissolve into the water. Then add the flour, butter, and salt to a stand mixer bowl and use the dough hook to knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic.
