Are All Shower Diverters the Same?

Diverters are often confused with cartridges, which are separate valves. In reality, they are one and the same. A diverter is a shower faucet handle that allows you to control the amount of water coming from one faucet. A cartridge contains the water-moving components that turn the water on or off. A cartridge is not synonymous with a diverter, however. The two terms are often used interchangeably.

There are many types of shower diverters available on the market. The most common one is the single-valve T diverter, which has a handle that pulls up straight from the tub faucet and opens the flow to the tub spout. These can be troublesome over time, because the rubber parts can become worn. Some common symptoms are leaks and changes in the direction of the flow. It’s important to replace these diverters as soon as possible.
