Jaisalmer

Located in the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer was an important medieval trading town. Located just north of Delhi, it is a princely state in the state of Rajasthan. A visit to Jaisalmer is a must, as this city is home to the fort, Jaisalmer Fort. Featuring 99 bastions, this sprawling hilltop citadel contains the royal palace of the Maharaja. Inside the fort are several Hindu and Buddhist temples and Jain shrines.

The fort and temples of Jaisalmer are an architectural wonder. The fort was built in the 12th-15th centuries and is built out of yellow sandstone. Rishabdev and Shitalnath are beautiful monuments with intricate engravings. The fort is the jewel in the crown of the city. There are also other beautiful buildings that make for a charming visit. The fort itself is a highlight of any trip to Jaisalmer.

Near the fort is the Tanot Mata Temple, which is located on the Indo-Pak border. It is believed to have magical powers, and protects the village from Pakistan intrusions. To see the temple, visitors must get a permit pass from the Indian Armed Forces. The temple is located in the town center, making it an ideal location for some of the best hotels in Jaisalmer. The city’s many museums are also worth visiting.

The fort is home to a plethora of craft shops. One can buy traditional artifacts from local artisans at Bellissima, a stall within the Jaisalmer Fort. The desert handicrafts emporium, run by LN Khatri of the Thar Heritage Museum, is another good place to find unique items and local textiles. In addition to handicrafts, the museum houses a wealth of information about the history of Jaisalmer.
